Flynn Butler Fraser | Sólàs Collective

Flynn Butler Fraser is a Scottish composer and multi-instrumentalist whose work blends a mixture of traditional, contemporary classical & electroacoustic elements. Currently studying at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, he has showcased his versatility through a wide range of performances: including live diffusing his electroacoustic works, working collaboratively on the absurdist melodrama ‘The Pathetic Planet’ with contemporary duo Romi Sarfaty and Dale Williamson, developing an acousmatic work for the Conservatoire’s ballet department, and having a new premiere performed by the Nordic Viola ensemble. Flynn currently resides in Clackmannanshire.

Flynn will perform a collection of diverse & contemporary works for the Scottish Smallpipes, this unique performance pushing the instrument out with its traditional boundaries. The music, ranging from ambient to active, is further supported through the composer’s distinct electronic approach.

Sólàs Collective is the experimental trio of Fionnlagh Mac A Phiocair, Sarah Hanniffy, and Tom Macfadyen. They combine bagpipes, viola, voice and real-time electronic signal processing to create ambient soundscapes with inflections of Scottish traditional music, folklore, oral history, natural landscapes and Gàidhlig song. A newly established group, the Sólàs Collective had their debut public performance at the Ceol Nua event as part of Piping Live! Festival 2024.

Sólàs Collective will be showcasing a series of works exploring aspects of Gàidhlig culture, landscapes, free improvisation and interaction. Their performance promises to be moving, immersive, and dreamlike.
