With Yorkshire-based composer and musicologist, Teresa Winter, Glasgow-based field-recordings / noise / percussion / guitar trio, NEY, and Berlin-based Slowfoam, whose textural, electroacoustic productions blur lines between synthetic and organic sounds The event marks recent album releases from the 3 acts, Teresa Winter’s ‘Proserpine’ and NEY’s self-titled debut, out at the tail-end of 2023, and Slowfoam’s ‘Transcorporeal Portal’, out in March 2024 on Somewhere Press. TERESA WINTER is a mainstay on prism-pushing experimental labels Night School, Death of Rave, Kashual Plastik, and Boomkat’s in-house Editions imprint. With a doctorate on the vitally important English composer and electronic music pioneer Delia Derbyshire, her work exists in conversation with the sonic and technological legacies of modernism, post-structuralist theory, and esoteric ritual practices. NEY are Lisa Fabian, Matt Robin and Eddie Brooks, a Glasgow-based trio, formed around workshops at Green Door Studios. Guided by malleable prompts, they build on spontaneous instrumentation, layering field recordings and noise elements with percussion and guitar, drawing on elements of jazz, ambient, spoken-word and desert blues. Lisa Fabian steers the trio with her unwavering vocal direction, spoken in native tongues of Swedish and German, which she processes and distorts into a fever dream of mysticised notations. Over the past 2 years, NEY have refined their sound largely through live performance and improvised sessions. As a band, they find synchronicity in their sparse but poised playing; a shimmer and sway through thickets of atmosphere, “presesenting vocals, guitar and drums as background details as significant, or not, as the listener wants them to be” (The Quietus). SLOWFOAM playfully and tenderly explores glitched-out, swirling soundscapes from drones, sparkling ambiance, fuzzy poetics, field recordings, and textural percussion. In an extension of their world-building process, Slowfoam’s textural, electroacoustic productions blur lines between synthetic and organic sounds, collaborating in equal part with technology and biology. They have released music with Lillerne Tapes, Jungle Gym Records and Mappa. On their debut LP, Transcorporeal Portal, forthcoming on Somewhere Press, aqueous field recordings are stretched, compressed and elongated into a symphony of celestial purls, an effervescent gurgling of digitally processed organic material. In a mutated evolution from 2000’s glitch and micro-tonal experimentalism, Slowfoam’s queered ambience oozes with sensual tactility. Their process, layered and enigmatic, evokes the unfathomable processing of AI algorithms, offering prophetic glimpses inside the shimmering portal.
