Last year in Madrid we found ourselves in the charming company of Olaf Ladousse and Carmen Espina aka Los Caballos de Düsseldorf who invited us back to their apartment / magical grotto in Malasaña, Madrid (in my ears it sounds like ‘My Lasagne’). Perfect hosts, they fed and watered us with tapas and beer before presenting us with a demonstration of the circuit-bending doorags they build from cannibalised toys. These things are wild. Like Mexican Death Heads pitch-bending in a Haunted House, they blip and bleep and blink and sometimes even walk around the room, all the while emitting a glorious symphony of electronic squall. Finally Olaf piped up “bring me the head of Alfredo Garcia” and the head was duly ushered in. In fact there were two heads; a larger metallic-looking thing that doesn’t go down well with customs officers at airports, and a smaller more colourful version easier to inspect and less ‘bomb-like.’
Once this beast gets going it’s like Raymond Scott going full-rave on mescaline. Having performed everywhere from Tokyo to Timbuktu, we’re so excited to finally welcome Los Caballos de Dusseldorf to the Old Hairdressers in Glasgow for a one-off live performance. We’ll also be showing a film documenting the wild disparate music scene of Madrid they’ve been interwoven into the fabric of for over three decades. Please come along. There’s no big tall building record company bankrolling this venture; these two are an entirely homegrown grassroots venture and we would appreciate your support. Also: three cheers to Marc Baines for the gorgeous poster and helping make this happen. This is going to be a special one.
