Baked Beans on the Doorstep: MARCH

Penknife’ is the newborn project of Glasgow’s eclectic trio Isa Gordon, Paul Thomson and Loris S. Sarid. Drawing a diagram between the three we find influences of Scottish trad, Ambient, Metal, Hyper – and less hyper-pop, merging into an elegant and weird extravaganza. At the stream’s estuary we find compositions that are songs by form, yet sprinkled with gritty abstractions that feed listeners bizarre black pudding tasting cotton candy, poetic politics and contemporary folklore.

Emilie Skrijelj and Tom Malmendier began to work together in 2019, with the duo “Les Marquises”, an electric and intense duo in which Emilie plays turntable, amplified accordion and electronics, and Tom plays the drums. Their last cd “Live in Nickelsdorf” was just released on their own label “eux sæm”. In parallel of this duo, they developed other projects in collaborations with international musicians, such as Michael Thieke, Otomo Yoshihide, Christine Abdelnour, Angelica Castello, Mike Ladd, a.o… Lately they wanted to explore a more acoustic duo, with only snare drum for Tom, and a small portable turntable for Emilie, mostly played with objects….

Anna Michels is a Scottish-Dutch pianist currently based in Glasgow. Classically trained in the Netherlands, Anna’s improvisation world opened up after attending the METRIC symposium in Leipzig. Since then, free improvisation has been a core part of her performing and teaching practice; joining the Glasgow Improvisers Orchestra in 2024, founding the “Ad Libitum Ensemble” at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, and teaching free improvisation to primary pupils at St Mary’s Music School. Her work draws on her classical upbringing, passion for contemporary music, and focus on collaborative practice.
